Unlogic Thing

Unlogic ThingThe search for a faint, yet priceless sense of liberty becomes much more insistent or driven in the discography of Saint Petersburg’s Unlogic Thing, who is otherwise known as Dmitry Byorn. Some radical changes are needed within daily experience if desire is ever to have free rein. Byorn publishes a poem as something of a calling card. In translation it might read: “I’m torching all the familiar faces – and all the homes, including my own, so the only place left to go is yours.” This impromptu behavior, bordering on delusion or danger, is defended elsewhere in calmer tones.

“I do not accept the role of professionalism within art. The work of professionals is trapped within stasis; it’s bound by various rules or modish tendencies. It’s excessively buffed and polished, being nothing more than a means to earn money and attract attention. I love psychos and geniuses; I adore them for the absolute freedom of their thoughts.”

Clearer still is this statement: “True beauty operates on the thinnest line between perfection and outrage, between precision and crudity, order and chaos. It can be hard to notice, since the people, objects, and phenomena endowed with that beauty are completely self-sufficient. They do not seek attention. Genuine beauty begins where binary thought ends.” Solitude seems a better path to freedom and self-respect than anything social. In the same manner, Byorn imagines greater value in a life of homelessness than in fidelity to any social enterprise. A closing, inherently romantic declaration or imperative from Unlogic Thing reads: “Gather more suffering, wandering souls.”

Void (2014)

The result of collaboration by two musical projects Unlogic Thing & r.roo is the creation of a pulsating sphere. It is grim and disturbing, cold and technogenic space. Music replete with choral inserts, breaking rasping beats and jammed glitch. This conjunction leads to the logical upshot. The emptiness and chilly soundscape of the title track “Void” makes the final touch.
